What it means to me to win 3 National Bizmums Awards.
All about collaboration
As I was hugging Steph and Jen for the first time, I was so excited because this is what Bizmums is about. Making connections and doing business in a way that feels good and fun. The Annual Conference and Awards, sponsored by 90 Days of Social, is the highlight of the Bizmums calendar as it’s a chance to finally meet people who you know as a thumbnail head from Facebook and can finally chat and hug in the flesh. You’ll know I was nominated for 5 Awards and I was gobsmacked when I was shortlisted for all 5 so October 8th at the Manor House, Alsager was an exciting day for me on so many levels. The day began with the fabulous Michelle Childs and Stacey Knight Jones leading us in a rousing, full room sing-a-long to Robbie’s “I Love my life.” (We were definitely better at the chorus than the verses!! LOL)
Inspiring speakers ahoy!
Then we had an informative and brilliantly delivered presentation by the knowledgeable Sue, Sue Tonks. I’ll never shake hands in the same way again. This was followed by positivity pants herself fellow Merseysider Emma Privilege who gave us Ten Top tips for positivity. What followed was the fabulous, down to earth and absolutely inspiring Victoria Molyneux of Want That Trend fame!! Her story alone was amazing and her tip to avoid burnout/feeling overwhelmed is simple, delegate!! After a delicious buffet lunch (can’t beat a good quiche!), we celebrated all the local hosts and then onto the Award winning.
Having won On Line Bizmum in 2015, I was feeling just as nervous and excited, but having nominated several of my favourite Bizmums, who’d also been shortlisted, a lot of my nerves were for them as I genuinely felt I’d won already by being a finalist in 5 of the 9 categories. The first award was On Line Bizmum of the Year and I was in the running. I was completely shocked when I heard the description from Award Sponsor, MySircles. This category was judged by Babita Devi who is a serial entrepreneur - her first business bStrategic is about helping people grow their businesses and she has also set up a technology company mySircles to connect parents on school-related matters. "I was looking for someone that was able to show exceptional connection with their audience, consistency across their platforms and was able to connect the 'why they do what they do' through their website and social media. It was a difficult category to judge, so many inspiring people doing such great work. Every nominee should be proud. The winner was picked for strong emotive language, consistency across sites, beautifully designed content and strong social media support and communication across all platforms. The winner is…” ME!! I was so delighted and went up for my award to ‘This Girl is On Fire!!’ The afternoon continued and it was wonderful to hear so many incredible stories from such inspirational ladies. As the Health and Beauty Bizmum was announced I had no idea I was about to share this one with one of my favourite Bizmum businesses. “The Health and Beauty Award not only represents outer beauty but more importantly represents inner beauty and the holistic approach to wellness. With that in mind I found it really difficult to judge this category, with so many inspiring, motivating and engaging Bizmums legends in one group. It was a nightmare. So I have the great pleasure of introducing the winner who is the most inspiring, passionate, dedicated, professional and engaging. But also a healer, therapist and author. How lucky are we that we have two of them. Please welcome Wood for the Trees Coaching and The Happiness Club.” The Award sponsor, Kirsty Percival of Asguardian Fitness, helping people to take a holistic approach to their wellbeing, had decided to break the rules and award this to both of us. Jo and I were so emotional and as I love Jo’s work, particularly with children’s mental wellbeing, it was a treat to share the stage as we group hugged to the sounds of ‘Happy’. And so, we arrived at the final category and I was excited to hear who had won this great honour, seriously didn’t imagine it would be me. Award Sponsor Cheryl White, Mercury Franchise Consultancy supports people to develop a franchise model having created a successful model in her unique Apollo Care Business. “I chose this winner because her clients describe her “as a genuine, caring, all giving, amazing woman.” And I wholeheartedly agree. She does amazing work helping women to look after their mental health; supports women all over the world either one to one or in on line settings, giving them a safe space to get clear on what they want in a Solution focused way. You are always so full of enthusiasm and support, despite what may be happening in your personal life. You are a true Inspiration. Michala Leyland Wood for the Trees.” AAAAAHHH I nearly fell off my chair as Celebrate boomed out of the speakers. A rush of excitement, embarrassment (3, sure my Mean Little Cow voice will have a lot to say about THAT!!!!But that’s for another blog) and sheer shock shot through me!! Poor Cheryl nearly got the life hugged out of her. I gave the Dementors from Harry Potter a run for their money. LOL A million photos later and it was time for us all to go and my partner in crime, Nadine Baynes, of Lighthouses Therapy Services, and I went off for a celebratory bite to eat before the journey home. What a day!! To be chosen out of everyone who was nominated to win Bizmum of the Year was a milestone in my business life I will never forget. My work at Wood for the Trees Coaching is so important to me and I don’t take these Awards for granted as they show what I mean to my clients.
